At Boyland Windows, we work alongside our sister company, Boyland Builders, to add an Orangery to your home. Built to the highest quality with limitless design options, the Orangery offers you a seamless extension to your home.
Not only will an Orangery create additional space, but it will also add significant value to your home. Whether designed as an open plan, orangery kitchen extension or simply a room for you to relax an orangery will add a definite wow factor to your home.
History of the orangery
Originating in 17th century Italian Renaissance gardens, Orangeries symbolised wealth and affluence. As the name suggests, they were used to grow orange and other citrus trees by allowing sunlight to enter through the glass exterior. Modern Orangeries extend the home similarly to conservatories but differ in structure and architectural features.
A contemporary year-round living space
An orangery is an ideal choice for those who wish to have an all-season room to enjoy. With the latest glazing technology, these extensions can shield your room from the summer sun’s heat whilst still allowing natural light to shine in. During winter, the orangery will be warm and cosy due to the effective insulation the glazing provides. South-facing orangeries are perfect for this purpose.
What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
This is perhaps one of our most frequently asked questions: Whilst orangeries have been around for many hundreds of years, it is the advent of modern glazing techniques that have turned what was formerly an addition to a stately home into what is now a stunning living space that can be added to many homes, blending a touch of luxury with a room to be enjoyed all year round.
An orangery tends to have a solid, perimeter flat roof with one or more roof lanterns. A conservatory, by contrast, is characterised by a fully glazed roof and usually a higher proportion of glass in its overall construction.
What are orangeries built from?
Orangeries can be built using bricks to match your existing house or rendered blockwork, or even full-height glazing with panels and bi-fold doors. The design is worked out with guidance from our Orangery expert.
The greater amount of solid brickwork construction in our Orangeries will help your new room space stay cooler in the summer, especially if you have a south-facing garden that receives the sun all day and, in the winter, your Orangery will be easier to keep warm.
The partially glazed roof will still let in a large amount of additional light, and this will radiate back into the adjoining part of the house.
Minimal maintenance
Made from robust materials like timber, uPVC and aluminium, modern orangery design does not require too much looking after. If you go for a self-cleaning glass option, your orangery will be virtually maintenance–free.
Will I need planning permission?
Most Orangeries are covered within permitted development, so planning isn’t required. But if it is, from planning permission to design, to specification and onto the highest standards of installation and compliance, the Boylands team are with you every step of the way.
